The winch has not yet been fully set-up. Of course there is no manholes, because this is a watermain, so the winch will be pushed back semi-straddling the hole and the pulley arm will be braced in the excavation.

Note that the excavation and it's trench shoring cage can be covered up with steel plates at night so that traffic can go over the hole.
